About Clothesmadefromscrap
Why We Write Jobs Up This Way
Clothesmadefromscrap works on garage doors across Huntington Beach from a unit on Garfield Ave, in the 92647 ZIP. Two vans, ordinary hours, no call centre.
The habit that makes this shop slightly different is that we record two things on every job rather than one. The first is the fault: the gear stripped, the door reversed, a spring let go. The second is whatever item had to be right before we were willing to close the ticket and drive away.
Those are not always the same thing, and the second one is usually the one nobody mentions when they ring.
Where That Habit Came From
Years of walking into garages where the visible complaint was tiny and the thing sitting underneath it was not. A door that stuck at the top turned out to have a bottom bracket somebody had already tried to unbolt. A noisy opener sat above two safety sensors mounted at knee height, which is to say two sensors that would not have caught the thing they exist to catch.
Once you have seen that a few dozen times you stop treating the call out reason as the whole job.
The Boundary, Stated Plainly
We do hardware and doors. Springs, cables, drums, rollers, tracks, brackets, hinges, openers, safety systems, weather seal, and the door slab between the garage and the house.
We do not do structural work. Headers, openings, framing, wall and ceiling assemblies, anything that carries load or forms part of the construction of the building goes to a licensed general contractor. When a job crosses that line, and a few do, we stop, write down what we found and hand the owner something they can put in front of a GC.
We are also not code inspectors and will not pose as them. We read the equipment standards that apply to what we install, UL 325 for entrapment protection and the California battery backup requirement among them, and we set our work to those standards. That is a fitter doing the job properly. It is not an inspection, it is not a sign off, and anybody offering you one on the back of a spring change is overreaching.
What You Actually Get
A phone call where somebody asks what the door is doing rather than reading you a menu. A price before the work, not after. An invoice with the fault and the requirement both on it, in words you can read without a glossary.
And on the way out, two tests every time: an obstruction reversal and a manual balance check with the opener disconnected. Ten minutes, on us, on every visit.
